Oxbridge interview preparation
The interview is the part of an Oxford or Cambridge application that families leave latest and prepare least, and it is the part every offer goes through. This page sets out what the interview decides, when it happens for 2027 entry, and what preparation is worth doing. Checked on 24 August 2026.
What the interview decides
Cambridge is explicit about this. In the University's own words, “everyone who is made an offer will have been interviewed” (University of Cambridge). Being interviewed does not mean an offer follows. Many more people are interviewed than are admitted.
Cambridge describes the interview as an academic conversation about the subject you want to study, used to assess your potential for the course. That description is worth taking literally. The interview tests how you handle an unfamiliar problem while somebody watches, which is a different skill from the one that produces predicted grades.
The 2027 entry timeline
- 15 October 2026, 18:00. UCAS deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary science.
- November 2026. Most Cambridge interview invitations are sent. Some arrive in early December.
- 7 to 18 December 2026. Cambridge main interview period. Oxford interviews run in December, exact dates not yet published.
- 12 January 2027. Oxford decisions. 27 January 2027. Cambridge decisions.
- Mid to late January 2027. Cambridge winter pool interviews.
Roughly three weeks separate the invitation from the interview. That is the panic window. It is not enough time to build a way of thinking, which is why September and October do the real work.
What preparation actually consists of
Reading around the subject, and being able to say why the thing you read was interesting. Working through a problem out loud, including the part where you are stuck, because the interviewer is watching how you get unstuck. Being questioned on your personal statement by somebody who knows the field. Sitting the admissions test that gates your course, since ESAT, TMUA, UCAT and LNAT all close before the interview season starts.
Mock interviews help most when the person asking is a subject specialist who has sat on the other side of the table. A generic practice interview mostly teaches you to be comfortable, which is worth something and is not the same thing.
How we work
We match one tutor to one student. Every tutor is interviewed by us, subject-verified and enhanced-DBS checked, including the children's barred list, before their profile goes live on our directory. A written report follows every lesson, so a parent paying for interview preparation can see what happened in it.
Our tutor applications are concentrated in Medicine, Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Economics. If we cannot staff your subject well we will say so rather than send you somebody approximate.
Common questions
Do you need an interview to get an Oxbridge offer?
At Cambridge, yes. The University states that everyone who is made an offer will have been interviewed. So for a serious applicant the interview is not a possibility to prepare for once it is confirmed, it is the step every offer passes through.
When are Oxbridge interviews held for 2027 entry?
Cambridge runs its main interview period from 7 to 18 December 2026, with most invitations sent in November. Winter pool interviews follow in mid to late January 2027. Oxford interviews are held in December and Oxford has not published its exact 2026 timetable yet.
When should preparation start?
The UCAS deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary science is 18:00 on 15 October 2026. Invitations arrive from mid-November for interviews starting 7 December, which leaves about three weeks between knowing and sitting. Work that changes how you think about a subject takes longer than three weeks, so the useful window is the one that is open now.
Will my interview be online or in person?
At Cambridge the College decides, and you usually cannot request a format. Of the 29 Cambridge Colleges, 17 interview everyone online and 5 interview everyone in person, with the rest deciding by where you live. Our college by college table has the detail.
Which subjects do you cover?
Our current tutor applications are concentrated in Medicine, Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Economics, which is close to the Cambridge interview list. Ask us for the subject you need and we will tell you honestly whether we can staff it.
What does it cost?
The readiness check returns a price for your subject, year group and target before anyone speaks to you. Parents book at the tutor's rate, which is shown before anything is booked, and the published bands by level are on the pricing page. Admissions tutoring is £55 to £90 an hour.
